Dreaming up a most lovely (and in this case, recurring) gathering that could grace the occasional evening throughout these dark winter months. This wouldn’t be your standard book club. It would be about the classics, a theme that would carry through in subject matter, fare and style. The works of Dickens, Shakespeare and Twain would complement time-honored flavors of espresso and pastry. The gathering would be beckoned by a unique little coffee house or pub every time, treasures unto themselves in the midst of a big modern city. Members, though perhaps initially unfamiliar, would grow to cherish the treats & company alike and may even allow the idea of classicism to slip into their own individual style…

Dreaming up a party scheme, perfectly timed for the dwindling weekends of December. Wouldn’t it be lovely to host a little holiday fete, featuring a barrage of festive liqueurs and indulgent treats? Rich chocolate delights would be offset by rosy, refreshing fruit. The treats would make their way around the room on elaborate silver serve-ware. Decor would be black & white with just a touch of red. Frank Sinatra Christmas tunes would float around the room, mingling with the scent of peppermint drinks & pine needles. The guests would sparkle, just like the lights adorning the tree…

Officially the one-week countdown to one of my favorite holidays of the year! Celebrating with a mood board, which will perhaps inspire the look of your own little gathering. Maybe this year consider a rustic look, incorporating warm, distressed wood, eclectic details and folksy patterns. Let color take over a bit and represent the entire festive palette in table decor and serve-ware. Create and indulge in all the classic dishes. And take the time to revel in the delight of being surround by those that you love and cherish..

As I look at the 10-day forecast it has me thinking that this first weekend in November may be the last time to actually take advantage of the great outdoors. That’s not to say that late-fall’s chill will keep us from the occasional yet brisk run, walk or stroll, but the ability to spend time enjoying the delights of outdoor entertainment (even with a roaring fire or toasty heater!) might just be drawing to a close. As such, it seems to be the perfect time to celebrate on the backyard patio with the crunchy falling leaves swirling and mid-day sunshine warming. Dreaming of a lunchtime gathering with treats that feature fall’s delicious bounty: butternut squash soup, autumn apple salad & upside down pear cakes with sweet vanilla honey. Lanterns hold festively-scented candles and apple cider graces the punch bowl. Guests come on foot or bicycle in their cozy and chic fall outerwear. The air, while crisp, awakens everyone’s senses to the beautiful sights and smells of fall..

Dreaming of a festive little gathering that would be all about celebrating the richest flavors of the season. Charming conversation would be interspersed with a touch of education as a connoisseur explains the unique flavors and offers advice on delicious pairings. Different stations would range from sweet and tangy to heavy and bitter…and everywhere in between. Thick, colorful pottery would purvey the various delights. Guests would be casually chic, wearing seasonal colors and patterns. Shiny, glowing light would filter through the windows and the aromatic flavors would hang in the air, mixed with the scent of the crackling fire…

Dreaming up a little occasion today that would fit this mid-October moment like a glove. It seems that the signature colors and flavors of fall are even more lovely when you add just a little bit of fancy. The setting would include a romantic dark-wood great room adorned with fruit-inspired florals and countless sparking tea lights. Guests would arrive in little black dresses, wingtips and herringbone sport coats. The cocktails would be festively-hued in flavors of honey, spiced ginger & apple. Delicious favorites like caramel-dipped fruit, butterscotch and almond-flavored pastry & roasted squash sips would be passed and enjoyed between sparkling conversation and maybe just a little bit of dancing..

We (finally) have a brief break from the rain today here in Chicago and in the wake of the storm the air took on a bit of a balmy feel, making for perfect jeans-and-sweater weather. It makes me want to throw a little fête to celebrate the lovely fall feel and the fresh bounty of seasonal treats. A sun room or sheltered garden get-a-way would be perfect for such an affair, and the space would smell of fruit, spreads and fresh-baked bread. There would be a basket full of blankets to keep guests comfortable as they sip their spiced cider, watch the sun fade away for the evening and breathe in the dreamy scent of flowers..

Dreaming up an elegant little soiree today, set somewhere like a lush backyard patio or a beautifully fragrant garden. This would be no ordinary picnic! It would be wonderfully lavish with guests arriving in their finest to the lovely sound of Nat King Cole floating through the early-fall breeze. Fare would be picnic-esque (crudités, brie & baguettes, fruit & honey) but dressed up in beautiful glassware and china. Signature cocktails would be passed along with blush champagne. The glowy setting and classic music would beckon dancing & laughter and as the air grows chillier, ladies wrap up in soft cashmere to avoid missing a moment of the delightful affair…

You’ve heard me dream up little soiree schemes before (remember this & this?) Well, I’ve decided to pay a bit more homage to the joie of party planning with more regular scheming and a whole new category.. I hope you enjoy 🙂
With the beautiful weather we’ve been having, what could be more lovely than a happy little late-afternoon lunch. The decor would be casual – pretty shades of pink & yellow and perhaps a touch of gingham. White, classic serveware would set off bunches of pink peonies and the general feel would be homey and inviting. Though set inside, windows and doors would be open, beckoning the smells and sounds of a late-summer afternoon outdoors. The menu would be simple but the slightest bit indulgent: a summer garden pasta with fresh vegetables & herbs, freshly-baked bread that almost tastes like pastry, lemon cake & fresh blueberries and sun-brewed iced tea with just a splash of fresh-squeezed lemonade. Conversation would flit about in a random yet connected way, ranging from recent fashion finds to the astonishment that Labor Day is just around the corner…
